Uyo is the capital of Akwa Ibom State and the seat of the State Government.
Uyo Local Government Area is the administrative centre of Akwa Ibom State. The state was created from the former Cross River State on 23 September 1987, with Uyo as its capital. Uyo is also the headquarters of the local government area. It lies in the Akwa Ibom North-East Senatorial District and covers about 155 square kilometres. Ikono, Ibiono Ibom and Itu are to the north, Uruan to the east, Abak to the west, and Ibesikpo Asutan, Nsit Ibom and Etinan to the south.

The indigenous communities are mostly Ibibio. They are historically organised in the Offot, Etoi, Oku and Ikono Ibom clans. Ibibio is widely spoken alongside English. The 2006 national census recorded 305,961 residents, made up of 155,698 males and 150,263 females. The town has kept growing beyond the old city centre.
As the state capital, Uyo is a centre for public administration, trade, education, health care, hospitality, transport and small enterprise. Construction and agriculture are also part of the local economy.
Government House, the ministries and agencies, the major markets and the University of Uyo bring in people from all 31 local government areas of the state. Other well-known places include Ibom Plaza, Unity Park and Akpan Andem Market.

Grants, welfare and support, kept apart from the projects that were built.
The three reconstructed model primary schools provide improved classrooms and audio-visual learning facilities. The Model Primary Health Centre and the emergency ambulance operations centre are designed to bring care closer to residents and to cut delays in emergencies. The 17 compassionate homes give vulnerable families housing, and the empowerment programme reached 487 residents.
The grants of N227.4 million to farmers, traders and MSMEs are meant to help beneficiaries restock and expand. The equipment leasing facility at Ekpri Nsukara holds 25 tractors and offers a 50 per cent subsidy on leasing. Roads such as the Shelter Afrique roads and the Idoro-Ukpom Abak Road give better access to markets and homes. The convention centre, hotel, shopping city and palm resort are expected to create work for vendors, hospitality staff and event planners.
The Atiku Abubakar Way tunnel and the related drains carry storm water away from roads and homes. The 10.412 km Idoro/Pepsi Junction to Ukpom Abak road links Uyo and Abak and improves access to Ukpom Abak General Hospital. The Oron Road corridor extends towards the airport axis. The CNG terminal is expected to improve movement between Uyo and other LGAs.
