About Urue Offong/Oruko

It is one of the five Oro-speaking local government areas. It is made up of six of the nine Afaha clans of the Oron Nation: Afaha Ubodung, Afaha Ukwong, Afaha Ibighi, Afaha Ebughu, Afaha Okpo and Afaha Okiuso. Afaha Ubodung is the largest, with 21 villages. There are ten wards, Urue Offong 1 to 5 and Oruko 1 to 5.

The people are mostly farmers, fishermen and traders. The soil supports mangrove swamp forest and palm bush. The area has seafood, palm oil, farm produce and crude oil.

Oruko was the economic centre of the Oron Nation in the 1800s. Hausa, Ilaje and Igbo traders came to trade at the Urue Oruko Market. The area also has the highest number of high-profile academics in the state.

What people say

A senior official says the administration's projects have opened the area up for commerce.

Governor Umo Eno, represented by his deputy, says this is the first road the state government has built in the LGA and will not be the last, and that a road from Oruko Junction to Eyubiasang Beach is part of the plan.

The Governor says the road opens up the council headquarters for gradual urbanisation and will boost the local economy by improving access to markets for farmers.
