The people are associated with seven primary clans: Akwa Uruan, Etongko Mkpe Uruan, Mutaka Uruan, Ekondo Uruan, Mosongko Uruan, Ibonda Uruan and Akpe Iboku Uruan. Four of these are formally recognised under the current traditional structure of the state. There are 13 INEC wards: Northern Wards 1 and 2, Central Wards 1 to 4 and Southern Wards 1 to 7. Culture is kept through the Ekpe Society and dances such as Ekombi, Mbaya, Itembe, Iwunwun, Ikan, Mmobi and Etop Eto. Local dishes include Eferi Ndek Iyak, Ukwok Afang and Asa Iwa.
Farming, fishing, oil palm production, raffia craft and trade are the main ways people earn a living. Cassava, yam, maize and other crops grow on the land. The creeks and waterways support fishing.
Uruan hosts or shares several state and federal facilities. These are the Ituk Mbang Methodist General Hospital, the State Medical Oxygen Production Plant at Ituk Mbang, the Renewed Hope Housing Estate at Ekpene Ukim, the Dakkada Estate at Ibiaku Essiet, the Ibom Icon Hotel at Nwaniba and the Victor Attah International Airport, which it shares with Okobo.
