About the project

The Ibom Icon Hotel renovation is the full refit of the state-owned Ibom Hotel and Golf Resort at Nwaniba, in Uruan Local Government Area near Uyo. The hotel was built in 2007 under Governor Victor Attah and has 163 rooms, seven chalets and a golf course. It had run for about 19 years without a major overhaul.

The Akwa Ibom State Government is paying for the work. Renovation began in March 2025, when Governor Pastor Umo Eno appointed former commissioner Charles Udoh as Managing Director to oversee it. The state set aside N16 billion in 2025 and N10.91 billion in 2026 for refurbishing, furnishing and the electrical and mechanical systems, N26.91 billion in all. Work is ongoing, and the whole hotel closed from 22 August 2026 so the work could be finished faster.

The work replaces furniture, fittings, tiles, beddings and carpets. It also adds 1,500 solar lights, gas-powered turbines to cut power costs, lighting for night golf, a marina dining area, a nightclub and a children's playground.

When it reopens, the hotel is to be managed by ALEPH Hospitality. The renovation is expected to bring guests back, create jobs and boost tourism in Uruan and the state, in line with the ARISE Agenda.
