About the project

The Blue River tourism development is a planned project to turn the Blue River in Ukanafun Local Government Area into a tourism destination. The river flows through Edem Idim and nearby communities. Its water has a clear turquoise colour, which local people have long called blue.

The project is being driven by the Akwa Ibom State Government. In January 2026 a state delegation led by Mr. Emem Almond Bob, Supervisory Commissioner for Special Duties and Ibom Deep Seaport, inspected the river. The team included the Chairman of the State Hotels and Tourism Board, Mrs. Ime Udo, and engineers from the Ministry of Special Duties. They were received by the Chairman of Ukanafun Local Government Area, Hon. Uyo Ukpanah.

The team visited the river to assess its present condition, the access routes to it and its tourism potential. The visit was meant to produce a full business case for the Governor to decide how the site should be developed. No contract or construction has been announced yet, so the project remains at the planning stage.

If developed, the site is expected to draw visitors to Ukanafun, create jobs and give local traders, food sellers and transport operators new customers. It is also meant to add to the revenue of the state. The project fits the tourism and economic diversification goals of the ARISE Agenda.

Impact Analysis

An assessment of the impact of these accomplishments on the people and communities.

For families and communities

If the plan goes ahead, the Blue River could become a place for residents and visitors to relax, and a point of local pride for Ward 2.

For work and income

A tourism site could bring visitors who spend money with local traders, transport operators and food sellers. Any such gain is still only a possibility.
