About the project

The dualisation of the 14.5-kilometre Airport - Okopedi Road turns the old single carriageway from the Uyo/Airport junction to Okopedi into a dual carriageway. The road runs through Uruan, Nsit Atai and Okobo Local Government Areas. It is the main road link between the state capital, Uyo, and the Oro nation.

The contract was first awarded under the previous administration of Governor Udom Emmanuel, but the earlier contractor left the work incomplete. Governor Umo Eno cancelled that contract and re-awarded it to Hensek Integrated Services Ltd. The Akwa Ibom State Government is paying for the road through the Ministry of Works and Fire Service. By July 2025 the work stood at about 98 percent.

The works include earthworks, a full drainage system with reinforced concrete slabs, asphalt surfacing, concrete median barriers and thermoplastic lane markings. The road passes the Victor Attah International Airport area, which Uruan shares with Okobo, and gives the communities along it a faster route to Uyo.

The dual carriageway is expected to cut travel time, make the road safer and ease the movement of people and goods between Uyo and the coastal Oro communities. It fits the ARISE Agenda's focus on roads that open up trade and connect rural areas to the capital.

The road was listed among the projects set for commissioning by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu during the state's 39th anniversary celebrations in September 2026.

Impact Analysis

An assessment of the impact of these accomplishments on the people and communities.

For families and communities

The road is meant to give communities in three Local Government Areas a direct way to reach the airport and one another. It can make trips for work, school and family visits easier.

For work and income

A road tied to the airport can bring trade and transport business to the villages along it. The road is tied to the main transport and economic corridors of the area.
