About the project

The Awa internal roads project covers 14.8 kilometres of roads and a spur in 16 sections, with 1.9 kilometres of discharge drains, in Awa, Onna Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State.

The road network was started under the previous administration of Governor Udom Emmanuel, whose hometown is Awa. The Eno administration finished it under the ARISE Agenda, through the Ministry of Works and Fire Service. Governor Umo Eno commissioned the roads himself on Monday 21 September 2026, as a mark of respect and continuity.

The roads are single carriageways of different widths, built on a 150 millimetre compacted sub-base, with concrete drains along the sides. They join the communities in Awa and link residents to their farm settlements. The drains carry rain water away so the roads do not wash out.

The roads give people in Awa and nearby communities an easier way to reach each other, their farms and the services in Awa, including the General Hospital at Awa Iman, where the Akwa Ibom State University Teaching Hospital is being developed. The state plans measures to stop heavy-duty vehicles from damaging the new roads.
