Onna is known for farming, pottery and fishing, and for its culture, traditions and local food.
Onna Local Government Area is in the south-central part of Akwa Ibom State. It was created on 3 May 1989, during the administration of General Ibrahim Babangida. It covers about 47.51 square kilometres. It shares boundaries with Eket, Ibeno, Eastern Obolo, Mkpat Enin and Etinan. The headquarters is at Abat, where the council secretariat is.
The name ONNA is made from the names of its three original clans: Oniong, Nung Ndem and Awa. The former Awa clan had eleven autonomous communities. It was later divided into Asuna Nung Oku clan, with six villages, and Awa Afaha clan, with five villages. Onna now has four clans and 42 villages. Edidem Raymond Timothy Inyang is the Paramount Ruler.
People in Onna mainly farm, make pottery and fish. The area has clay, fisheries, limestone, oil palm, crude oil and natural gas. Edereobo Market is the main market. It serves residents, farmers, traders and visitors from nearby communities.
Onna has produced many people known in public service, academia, business and politics. They include Edidem Uyioata Akpabio, the first Oku Ibom Ibibio, and Dr. Clement Nyong Isong, who served as Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria and as the first civilian Governor of the old Cross River State. Others are Obong Ufot Ekaette, the first civilian Deputy Governor of Akwa Ibom State, and Mr. Udom Gabriel Emmanuel, Governor of Akwa Ibom State from 2015 to 2023.
