About the programme
This entry covers the Akwa Ibom State Government's support to oil palm farmers in Onna Local Government Area. Oil palm is one of Onna's natural resources.
Onna was one of two pilot LGAs, with Nsit Ibom, in the first distribution under the State's Oil Palm Tree Crop Revolution programme. 20,000 improved oil palm seedlings were given to farmers at Abat, the Onna council headquarters. The distribution was coordinated by the Akwa Ibom State Agriculture and Food Security Committee, chaired by Prof. Okon Ansa.
Governor Pastor Umo Eno launched the programme on 28 May 2026. It plans to give out more than 620,000 improved seedlings across all 31 LGAs, with each smallholder farmer receiving 40 elite tenera seedlings free of charge. The Nigerian Institute for Oil Palm Research (NIFOR) supplies the seedlings. Over five years the programme targets more than 60,000 hectares of oil palm.
The Governor has said Akwa Ibom fell from first to fourth place in national oil palm production and wants to win back that position. The programme is expected to raise rural incomes, create work for young people and supply raw materials for agro-processing. It forms part of the Agricultural Revolution pillar of the ARISE Agenda.
