About the project
The ARISE Youth Friendly Centre is a skills and enterprise centre for young people in Onna Local Government Area. It is part of a State programme to build one centre in each of the 31 LGAs.
The centres are funded by the Akwa Ibom State Government under Governor Pastor Umo Eno's ARISE Agenda and run by the Ministry of Youth Development. Council chairmen provide land at their LGA headquarters. Each centre has a multipurpose training hall, a digital library and ICT hub, a creative and media centre, a youth enterprise kiosk, networking spaces and recreation areas, with solar power.
Each centre is meant to train about 1,000 young people a year in three-month courses, so the 31 centres together can train 31,000 youths yearly. Trainees must be 45 or younger and must come from and live in the LGA where the centre is located.
The centre is expected to give young people in Onna practical skills, a place to meet and create, and a path into jobs and small businesses. Its current status is yet to be confirmed.
