About the project
The Akwa Ibom State University Teaching Hospital is being developed at Awa Iman in Onna Local Government Area. It sits on the premises of the General Hospital, Awa, which is being turned into a teaching hospital for Akwa Ibom State University.
Work began under the previous administration of Governor Udom Emmanuel. Construction was flagged off with support from the ASR Africa Initiative, founded by BUA Group chairman Abdul Samad Rabiu. The initiative pledged a N5 billion health infrastructure grant and released N2.5 billion at once to start work.
Governor Pastor Umo Eno has kept the project going. In late 2023 he said work on its completion was being stepped up. Work is ongoing.
When complete, the hospital is meant to serve as the teaching hospital of the State University and to complement the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital, which has been the only public tertiary hospital in the State. It is expected to ease the heavy patient load at UUTH and bring specialist care closer to people in Onna and nearby LGAs. It fits the health component of the ARISE Agenda.
