About the project

The haemodialysis unit at the General Hospital, Ikot Ekpene, is a new kidney care facility. It allows patients with kidney failure in Ikot Ekpene and nearby communities to receive dialysis at a public hospital close to home.

The unit was provided by the Akwa Ibom State Government under Governor Pastor Umo Eno. It was set up in response to rising cases of renal failure, and it is part of a plan to place haemodialysis units in all 10 federal constituencies of the state.

The unit was commissioned on Monday, March 24, 2025, together with the refurbished Accident and Emergency unit and Paediatric ward of the hospital. Governor Eno was represented by Dr. Patrick Umoh, the Member representing Ikot Ekpene/Essien Udim/Obot Akara Federal Constituency.

The unit is expected to serve Ikot Ekpene and neighbouring communities and to reduce the travel and cost of kidney care for families. It reflects the ARISE Agenda's focus on health care.
