About the project

The renovation of the Accident and Emergency unit at General Hospital, Ikot Ekpene is a health facility upgrade in Ikot Ekpene Local Government Area. The work covered the emergency unit and the children's ward of the hospital, which serves Ikot Ekpene town and nearby communities.

The project was paid for by the Akwa Ibom State Government under Governor Umo Eno. The emergency ward was renovated and re-equipped. It now has a new reception, records and waiting area, a standard triage section and a fully equipped emergency theatre. Consulting rooms, call rooms and rest rooms for nurses were also provided, and the children's ward was renovated. The project is completed.

The upgraded unit gives patients who arrive in an emergency a proper place to be checked, sorted by need, treated and, where needed, operated on. The children's ward gives sick children a clean and well equipped space with new beds and cots.

The upgrade is expected to improve emergency care for Ikot Ekpene and neighbouring communities, and it fits the ARISE Agenda goal of better health care close to home.

The unit was commissioned on 24 March 2025, together with the new Haemodialysis Unit at the same hospital. Governor Eno was represented by Dr Patrick Umoh, member representing Ikot Ekpene/Essien Udim/Obot Akara Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives.
