Projects in Ikot Ekpene

Ikot Ekpene is known as Raffia City for its raffia weaving and craft products, and as the oldest local government council in Nigeria.

Ikot Ekpene Local Government Area was created as a Division in 1951 by the British colonial administration. It was the first experimental local government council in British West Africa and remains the oldest local government council in Nigeria. It is also the headquarters of the Ikot Ekpene Federal Constituency.

About Ikot Ekpene

The LGA sits at the centre of a road triangle that links Aba, Umuahia and Cross River State. This position has made it a centre for trade and transport in Annang land. The people are Annang, and there are two major clans, Ikot Ekpene Urban and Amanyam.

The economy is driven by trade, crafts and agriculture. The area is known for raffia weaving, furniture and other local products, which earned it the name Raffia City. Its markets sell farm produce, raffia goods and other items, and draw traders from neighbouring states and communities.

Ikot Ekpene has some of the earliest schools in the region, including a state college established in 1946. The town also has the General Hospital, Ikot Ekpene. The area keeps Annang culture and traditions, with traditional festivals and a name for hospitality.

How it helps people in Ikot Ekpene

For families and communities

Twelve compassionate homes, nine of them finished, give shelter to vulnerable residents. The Mbiaso model primary health centre is commissioned, and the General Hospital in Ikot Ekpene now has a haemodialysis unit and a renovated accident and emergency unit. A completed model primary school at Ikot Ewang adds classroom space, and a youth development centre has been flagged off.

For work and income

The International Market is under construction and is expected to serve traders and bulk buyers in the town. Grants went to 141 traders, 54 farmers and 63 equipment-support beneficiaries, with two MSME grants. Roads in Amanyam and the urban area are designed to ease movement of goods and people.

For getting around and reaching services

There are six road projects, from 1.1km to 7.7km, three of them completed and three ongoing. The Amanyam roads link villages to Aba Road and to Obot Akara LGA, and the Goretti road includes a drain.

What people say

A stakeholder links the 1.1km Spring Road to Goretti Secondary School.

A stakeholder says the road was awarded within the first 100 days of the administration.

The LGA chairman says that the work on this road is the reason the girls' secondary school is still in existence.

A stakeholder says the road links Aba Road, Ibong Ikot Akan and Mbiaso, and reaches Ikot Ukpong village in Obot Akara LGA.

A former chairman says the road was first awarded under the Udom Emmanuel administration and completed under the Umo Eno administration.

A former transition chairman says the work improved living standards in the rural areas and reduced a long standing gap in development between Ikot Ekpene urban and Amanyam clan.

The former transition chairman says the roads have added value to landed property in the area.

A lawmaker says an ambulance was donated to support the centre in emergency cases.

A commissioner says the centre helps people in the area to reach medical care at their convenience.

Mbiaso Model Primary Health Centre

Stakeholders say the market was the first request made by Ikot Ekpene stakeholders, and that funds were released for it before the official flag-off.

A commissioner says that with the market, people of Ikot Ekpene and nearby areas will no longer need to travel to Aba for bulk purchases.

The LGA chairman says the market would make the town a commercial city beyond the raffia business.
