About the project
The Ikot Ukpong-Mbiaso Bridge is part of the road and bridge project on the Mbiaso - Ikot Ukpong - Nto Edino corridor in Obot Akara Local Government Area. The road on this corridor is more than 7 kilometres long. The bridge crosses at Mbiaso and links Obot Akara with Ikot Ekpene Local Government Area. For years the old crossing here was in a poor state.
The Akwa Ibom State Government approved the contract in May 2024. Governor Umo Eno announced it at the commissioning of the Nto Ide - Ikot Amba bridge in the same LGA, and gave the job to Senyang Engineering, the firm that completed the Nto Ide bridge. The project sits under the Ministry of Works and Fire Service. By January 2026 work on the road was well advanced and preparations for piling the Mbiaso Bridge were going on. Work is ongoing.
Once complete, the bridge is meant to give a shorter and safer route between Nto Edino, the headquarters of Obot Akara, and Ikot Ekpene. The corridor also links Akwa Ibom with neighbouring Abia State. It is expected to make it easier for farmers and traders to move goods, and for people to reach markets, schools and health centres.
The bridge is one of three major bridge projects in Obot Akara. It is part of the ARISE Agenda push to open up rural communities that have long had poor road links. It has not yet been commissioned.
