Obot Akara is known for its cultural heritage, its farming potential and its position on the border between Akwa Ibom State and Abia State.
Obot Akara Local Government Area was created from the former Ikot Ekpene Local Government Area on 4 December 1996, under the then Head of State, General Sani Abacha. It lies in the equatorial region. It shares boundaries with Abia State and Ini Local Government Area to the north, Essien Udim to the south, Ikot Ekpene to the east and Abia State to the west.
There are three groups of wards: Obot Akara, Nto Edino and Ikot Abia. The Paramount Ruler holds the title Ekporikpo I of Obot Akara. The area is part of the Ikot Ekpene/Essien Udim/Obot Akara Federal Constituency and the Akwa Ibom North-West Senatorial District.
Farming is the main activity. Farmers, traders and market women use the roads to reach markets. The communities are spread out, and they trade with neighbouring areas in Akwa Ibom State and Abia State. The area also has natural resources.
Communities in the area include Nto Ide, Obot Atan, Usaka Annang, Nto Ndang, Nto Ekpu, Ikot Amba, Atan Ibong, Ibong Uruk and Abiakpo Ikot Otu.

For work and income
The roads and bridges matter for the area's farming, scattered communities and trade with neighbouring areas. In total 49 farmers received grants worth N24,500,000 and 78 traders received grants worth N44,150,000. A further 64 people received equipment, 2 received MSME grants, 2 received mini buses and 1 received a car.
For getting around and reaching services
One bridge with an 800 metre approach road is completed, and three road projects and one separate bridge project are ongoing. Together they are designed to link communities within the Local Government Area and with neighbouring areas. There is also a solar-powered borehole at Ibong Uruk.
