About the project

The Solar-Powered Water Project at Ibong Uruk is a community water scheme in Obot Akara Local Government Area. Ibong Uruk is a village in the Nto Edino area, close to the council headquarters.

The project was delivered by the Akwa Ibom State Government under Governor Umo Eno, through the Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation. It has been completed and handed over to the community. It is one of more than 12 community water schemes the state has completed across its three senatorial districts.

The facility pumps water from a borehole using solar power. Like the other schemes in this group, it comes with a water treatment plant, so the water supplied is meant to be clean and safe to drink.

The scheme is expected to give families in Ibong Uruk and nearby villages a reliable source of safe water close to home. It is meant to cut the time women and children spend fetching water and to reduce water-borne illness such as diarrhoea and typhoid. It fits the ARISE Agenda goal of bringing basic services to rural communities.
