About the project
The Youth Development Centre in Obot Akara is a building project meant to give young people in the Local Government Area a place for skills training, youth programmes and capacity building.
It is an Akwa Ibom State Government project under Governor Umo Eno's ARISE Agenda. The state plans one such centre in each of its 31 Local Government Areas, and has set up a stand-alone Ministry of Youth Development. Work on the Obot Akara centre is ongoing. The exact site, contractor and progress are not yet known.
The centres are designed to train young people in skills such as ICT, fashion and design, and catering. When all of them are running, the state expects to train about 31,000 young people a year.
Once completed, the Obot Akara centre is expected to let young people learn a trade close to home, without travelling to bigger towns, and to help them find work or start their own businesses.
