About the project

The Youth Development Centre in Ikot Ekpene is one of the ARISE Youth Development Centres being built across Akwa Ibom State. The centres are meant to give young people a place close to home to learn skills, start small businesses and get career guidance, without having to travel to Uyo.

The project is funded by the Akwa Ibom State Government through the Ministry of Youth Development, which Governor Umo Eno set up as a stand-alone ministry in September 2024. Local government councils were asked to provide land for the centres at their council headquarters. In September 2026 the Commissioner for Youth Development listed Ikot Ekpene among the places where the ministry has built youth development centres, along with Oron, Ikono, Etinan, Itu and Ibiono.

The centres being built across the 31 local government areas are equipped with solar power, internet connectivity and indoor games. Training at the centres covers areas such as ICT, digital literacy, fashion design and catering, with about 100 young people in each training cycle.

The centres are expected to help young people gain practical skills, find work or create their own jobs, and stay productively engaged in their communities. They are a key part of the ARISE Agenda for youth.
