About Ikot Abasi

Ikot Abasi has five clans. One is Edemaya (also spelt Edemeya), which has 23 villages. Wards include Ibekwe, Ete, Ukpum Okon, Edemaya and Ikpa Nnung Assang. The population is about 144,000, from a National Population Commission projection.

People live mainly by fishing and farming. There are traders in palm oil, cassava and fish. Poor roads and weak bridges have made it hard to move produce and fish to market, most of all in the rainy season from June to October.

Notable places include Ikot Abasi town, the General Hospital in Ikot Abasi and the East-West Road, which passes through the area. Mkpat Enin Local Government Area is a neighbour, and the two share a federal constituency with Eastern Obolo.

How it helps people in Ikot Abasi

For families and communities

The compassionate homes (10 homes, with 11 beneficiaries) give shelter to vulnerable residents, replacing old mud-walled houses. A completed model health centre in Mkpat Enin and a model primary health centre at Edemaya are designed to bring basic care closer to communities that travelled far to Ikot Abasi town. The Ikot Uboh model primary school and the Youth Friendly Centre are still under construction.

For work and income

The roads and bridges on the Mkpat Enin corridor are expected to help farmers and fishers move produce to market, especially in the rainy season. Palm oil, cassava and fish are traded in this area. The Youth Friendly Centre is designed to offer skills and enterprise support to young people once complete.

For getting around and reaching services

There are four road projects and two bridges, with the 18km and 10.519km roads the longest. The bridges are meant to keep communities connected during the rains. A solar-powered water facility at Ikot Iyire Akama adds a water point, and the two health centres add care points close to home.

What people say

A speaker says there is at least one ARISE Compassionate Home in each of the five clans of Ikot Abasi.

ARISE Compassionate Homes

A community leader says a team from Government House came to Edemeya to commission a model health centre.

A community leader in Edemeya says the clan has 23 villages, and that people there had to cross a bad bridge to reach Ikot Abasi for basic medical care, which caused real hardship.

Model Primary Health Centre, Edemaya

A community leader says the policy is for LGA chairmen to live closer to the people.

Chairman's official residence (Chairman's Lodge)

A community leader says the Youth Friendly Centre is about 85 percent complete.
