About the project

This is a model primary health centre being built at Afaha Ikot Nkan, in the Awa Afaha clan of Onna Local Government Area. Work is ongoing and is at an early stage.

The centre is part of the Akwa Ibom State Government's programme to build model primary health centres across all 31 LGAs under Governor Pastor Umo Eno's ARISE Agenda. Centres already opened elsewhere in the State, such as the one at Utu Ikot Okpo in Etim Ekpo LGA, serve people from several nearby LGAs.

When complete, the facility is meant to bring primary health care closer to residents of Afaha Ikot Nkan and nearby communities, including care for mothers and children, treatment of common illnesses and referrals to bigger hospitals. It is expected to cut the distance people travel for basic care.

The programme supports the State's push for universal health coverage, alongside its Health Insurance Scheme, as part of the health component of the ARISE Agenda.
