About the project

The 350-bed Ibom International Hospital is a 10-storey specialist hospital being built by the Akwa Ibom State Government. It is the main building of the Ibom Medical City, a health complex on about 100 hectares along the Uyo to Ikot Ekpene Road. The hospital is planned with 24 specialty departments.

The project is paid for by the state government under Governor Umo Eno. It is managed by Tokiye Integrated Medical Services, a health project firm working in Nigeria and the United Kingdom, together with the state Ministries of Health, Housing and Special Duties. The plan came out of a health sector town hall held in July 2025. The sod was turned in June 2026 in the presence of the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Professor Muhammad Ali Pate. Work is now going on across three wings at once, on a base of 356 foundation piles. The Governor has set June 2027 for completion.

The hospital will offer care that many people now travel abroad for, including cancer treatment, heart surgery, brain and spine surgery, trauma care, orthopaedics and critical care. The medical city around it will include homes for health workers, research and training centres, pharmacy and laboratory facilities and digital health systems. The state plans to train 100 Akwa Ibom indigenes abroad in specialist fields before it opens.

The project is expected to cut medical tourism, bring in investment and make the state a centre for specialist care in the region. It is close to the Victor Attah International Airport and Ibom Air, which should make it easy for patients to reach. It is a key health project of the ARISE Agenda.
