About the project

ARISE Compassionate Homes are houses built or rebuilt for poor and vulnerable families by the Akwa Ibom State Government under Governor Pastor Umo Eno. In Uyo Local Government Area, 17 homes are on the register, in various communities including Atan village.

Each home is a furnished two-bedroom house with solar power and a borehole for water. Each was planned at about N25 million, including taxes. Beneficiaries who had no home also receive N500,000 to start a small trade in their community.

The programme is statewide. The Governor first pledged homes for homeless senior citizens in their own villages, and the plan was later set at 500 homes, many of which have been completed and handed over.

The homes are meant to give vulnerable people safe and decent shelter and a means of support, as part of the ARISE Agenda.

An assessment of the impact of these accomplishments on the people and communities.

For families and communities

The homes provide safe accommodation for families who lived in unsafe or inadequate conditions. This has improved their dignity, security, health and family stability.

For work and income

Families in the homes are relieved of rent and the cost of constant repairs. The building work also employs local artisans.
