About the project

The Atiku Abubakar Way flood-control tunnel is a 1.3-kilometre underground channel in Uyo. It is 8 metres deep and carries storm water away from Atiku Abubakar Way, one of the city's main roads.

The road used to flood so badly in the rainy season that it became impassable, cutting off businesses, schools and homes. Governor Pastor Umo Eno ordered the work after he was sent a photo of the flooded road. The Akwa Ibom State Government awarded the contract in August 2023, and Hensek Integrated Services started work in September 2023. The job was finished in about eight months.

The same package rebuilt the flooded section of Atiku Abubakar Way with streetlights and reconstructed Afaha Ube Street, which restored access through the once waterlogged area up to Ikot Ekpene Road.

Former President Goodluck Jonathan inaugurated the tunnel and the roads on 24 April 2024. Traders and drivers on the corridor said their businesses and journeys had returned to normal. The project is meant to keep the road open all year and protect homes and shops from flood, in line with the ARISE Agenda.

Impact Analysis

An assessment of the impact of these accomplishments on the people and communities.

For families and communities

Flooding puts homes and lives at risk when it rains heavily. The tunnel is built to take storm water away, so families along this route are less exposed, and streetlights make the road safer at night.

For work and income

Floods damage shops, stock and the road itself. By moving storm water away, the tunnel protects businesses and property on this route and reduces the cost of repeated road repairs.
