Projects in Nsit Ibom

Nsit Ibom is known as part of the old Western Nsit territory and as the home of the Akwa Ibom State University of Education at Afaha Nsit.

Nsit Ibom Local Government Area was created on 23 September 1991 by the military administration of General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida. Before then it was part of a wider territory known as Western Nsit. After several changes to administrative boundaries, parts of that territory went to neighbouring areas. One part is now in Nsit Ubium, and Okon is now in Eket Local Government Area. The area is close to Uyo, the state capital.

About Nsit Ibom

The people are Ibibio. They share the wider Nsit ancestry and culture with their neighbours. The area has three main sub-clans: Afaha, Oboyo and Nnung Oku. Nnung Oku is made up of Edeobom and Nduo Eduo. For administration, Nsit Ibom is broadly divided into Asang and Mbiaso. It has 11 wards, five in Asang and six in Mbiaso.

People earn a living as farmers, traders, transport operators and small business owners. There are busy rural markets in the area, including Uruat Market and Ekponwa Market.

The Akwa Ibom State University of Education is at Afaha Nsit. It was formerly the State College of Education. The council secretariat is on the highway at Afaha Offiong, the heart of the local government. Other communities include Oboyo Ikot Ita, Ekpene Ikpan, Nung Udoe, Edebom, Ikot Obok, Oboetuk and Ikot Nya.

How it helps people in Nsit Ibom

For families and communities

Eleven families in vulnerable circumstances now live in furnished two-bedroom homes with solar power and a borehole, and they hold the title by Deed of Gift. The Model Primary Health Centre at Oboyo Ikot Ita has a maternity ward, labour room, pharmacy and laboratory, so residents can reach these services closer to home. The model primary school at Afaha Offiong and the University of Education at Afaha Nsit add places for learning at basic and higher level.

For work and income

Four roads are completed and eight more are under construction. They are designed to open rural communities and improve access to markets, including the road to Ekponwa Market. Grants went to 232 farmers, traders, equipment owners and transport or MSME operators, and an approved N1 billion fund is expected to support more traders, farmers and small businesses. The Youth Friendly Centre is designed to train young people in trades and digital skills.

For getting around and reaching services

Completed roads link communities such as Obo Ntong, Ikot Obok, Nung Ukana, Edebom and Owot Uta, and the ongoing roads are designed to connect more villages and institutions. The Water of Life project at Ekpene Ikpan supplies clean water to one community, and a project covering all 11 wards has been approved. The health centre runs on solar power, which is meant to keep it open at all hours.
