About the project

The Akwa Ibom State University of Education is the new status of the former Akwa Ibom State College of Education at Afaha Nsit, in Nsit Ibom Local Government Area. The upgrade turns the long-standing teacher training college into a university focused on teacher education.

The State House of Assembly passed the bill to establish the university on 14 March 2025 and sent it to the Governor for assent. On 13 October 2025, the State Executive Council, presided over by Governor Umo Eno, adopted the memo for the upgrade and approved it for regularization.

On 5 October 2026, at the World Teachers' Day celebration in Uyo, Governor Eno announced the upgrade of the college to a University of Education. He also appointed Professor Philip Afaha as the first Vice-Chancellor.

The university may award Diploma, B.Ed, M.Ed and Ph.D degrees in education. Work on internal roads on the campus is also under way.

The university is expected to raise the standard of teacher education, train more qualified teachers for the state's schools and open more admission places for young people from Akwa Ibom. It is part of the human capital development pillar of the ARISE Agenda.
