Mkpat Enin is known for farming, oil and gas resources, and as the home of the main campus of Akwa Ibom State University.
Mkpat Enin Local Government Area is in Akwa Ibom State, in the South-South region of Nigeria. Its headquarters is the town of Mkpat Enin. Its land area is about 397.2 square kilometres, and its estimated population for 2026 is 240,405, a projection based on earlier census data. It is part of the Ikot Abasi Federal Constituency, with Ikot Abasi and Eastern Obolo.
The people are mainly of Ibibio background. Most livelihoods are tied to agriculture, natural resources, commerce and education. The land is fertile and suits cassava, maize, plantain, oil palm, fruits and vegetables. Residents also keep livestock and fish.
The area has crude oil and natural gas, and its forests supply timber and palm products. The main campus of Akwa Ibom State University is at Ikot Akpaden, which makes the LGA an important centre for education in the state.

Construction of a Primary Health Centre at Ikot Ekpe is under way and is designed to bring care closer to nearby communities. There are also classroom and school projects, some not yet confirmed. Akwa Ibom State University gains a planned 400-capacity hostel and plans for more staff and programmes.
For work and income
The June 2025 ARISE event gave grants and equipment to traders, farmers and small businesses across three LGAs, including 42 Mkpat Enin farmers. Better roads are expected to help farm produce reach markets, since the local economy rests on farming. The youth hub is designed to build digital and business skills, and the coconut factory remains a discussion item only.
For getting around and reaching services
The 10.519km Nkikara road was commissioned on 6 November 2024. The 10.83km road with a 30m bridge and about 21.66km of drains was about 90% complete in April 2026.
