Itu Local Government Area lies between Uyo and Cross River State, and is an important link between the two. Its headquarters is at Mbak Atai Itam. Its land area is about 195.3 square kilometres and its 2006 population was 127,856. Later projections are much higher.

The LGA has 10 political wards. Its economy has long depended on agriculture, fishing, trading, commerce and other small businesses. Farm produce moves from its rural communities to markets and to the wider Uyo area.
Notable places include Itam Market, Mary Slessor Hospital and the Paramount Ruler's Palace. Communities in the LGA include Afaha Itam, Ekit Itam, Mbak Itam, Ntak Inyang and Ayadehe.

There are 12 Compassionate Homes for vulnerable beneficiaries, with 10 constructed and 2 ongoing. A Primary Health Centre at Ntak Inyang and the Mary Slessor Hospital Road are designed to bring healthcare closer to communities. A Model Primary School at Afaha Itam and a solar water facility at Ayadeghe address learning space and water access.
Road works at Itam Market and the Itam Industrial Park are intended to improve access for trade, manufacturing and transport. The industrial park itself is only proposed. Better roads are expected to ease the movement of farm produce to markets. The youth centre is designed to build skills in digital learning and entrepreneurship.
Itu has many road projects, including access roads, internal networks and the Nduetong Oku-Ibiaku Uruan-Ekit Itam corridor with a 60m bridge. The Urua Ekpa road includes an underground drain. The roads are expected to cut travel time and link rural communities to Uyo and to services.
