About the project

The Tabernacle Road project covers the 2.2-kilometre Tabernacle Road and the streets around it, together with a 0.97-kilometre underground outfall drain. The road runs off Ikot Ekpene Road and crosses the boundary of Uyo and Itu Local Government Areas of Akwa Ibom State.

The project is funded by the Akwa Ibom State Government and supervised by the Ministry of Works and Fire Service. Governor Pastor Umo Eno flagged off construction in August 2023, and the contract was re-awarded in February 2024. The contractor is Nsik Engineering Limited. Work is still ongoing.

The underground drain is the main part of the job. It is dug more than 12 metres deep and uses a pipe jacking system, with manholes at the low points. It is built to carry storm water under the busy Calabar-Itu Highway and empty it into the highway's drainage. Work on the 2.2-kilometre road is meant to follow once the drain is in place.

The Tabernacle Road area has long suffered from flooding, and homes along the road were flooded again during heavy rain in 2026. When finished, the project is expected to end the flooding, let residents return to affected streets and make movement easier between Uyo and Itu. It is part of the ARISE Agenda effort to protect and open up communities around the state capital.
