About the project

The Mary Slessor Hospital Road is a 5.0-kilometre road with 30-metre span bridges in Itu Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State. It runs from the T junction to the Mary Slessor General Hospital at Obot Itu.

The road was awarded in 2022 by the State Ministry of Works and Fire Service, and the contractor is Pitch Global Service Limited. Money was set aside for it in the 2022, 2023 and 2024 state budgets. By late 2024 the road had been graded but not tarred. In September 2023, Governor Pastor Umo Eno assured the people of Itu that the state would complete the road and its bridge. Work is ongoing.

The road leads to the hospital named after the Scottish missionary Mary Slessor, who worked in the area. The poor state of the road has made it hard for patients, health workers and traders to reach the hospital, with mud in the rainy season and dust in the dry season.

When finished, the road is expected to restore easy access to the hospital and to the communities along the route. It is also expected to support plans to revive tourism around Mary Slessor's heritage in Itu, and fits the ARISE Agenda goal of bringing health care closer to the people.

Impact Analysis

An assessment of the impact of these accomplishments on the people and communities.

For families and communities

The value of this kind of work is in cutting the distance and cost of seeking medical attention, mainly for women, children, elderly persons and low income households.

For work and income

A good road to the hospital lowers what families spend on transport when someone is sick. It can also help the hospital receive supplies and staff more reliably.
