Etinan is known for early Christianity and education: the Qua Iboe church baptised its first converts there in 1900, the first library in Ibibio land opened there, and Etinan Institute was founded in 1915.
Etinan Local Government Area was created in 1976 out of the former Uyo division. It lies 26 kilometres south of Uyo and 24 kilometres north of Eket. It was once the headquarters for all the villages in Nsit Ibom, Nsit Ubium and Nsit Atai, and for the northern and southern Iman villages.
Etinan has eleven wards, one clan and sixty-four villages. The people are mainly Iman Ibom and speak Ibibio. Their cultural societies include Ekpo, Ekong, Ebre and Idiong. Ekom Iman is the ancestral home of the Iman clan, and it is over 700 years old. The name Etinan comes from a father and son, Eti and Inan. The Paramount Ruler is HRM Edidem A. M. Akpanobong.
Farming and petty trading are the main occupations. Crops include yam, cassava, cocoyam and maize. Some people also work in small scale manufacturing, wine tapping, crafts, wood carving, sculpture and baking. The Ibom Paints factory is at Ikot Ekan.
Etinan traders who worked between Calabar and Ibeno invited missionaries to the town, and the Qua Iboe church baptised its first converts in 1900. Other churches followed. The first library in Ibibio land, the Etinan Reading Room, was set up here by David Mbek. Etinan Institute was established in 1915 and several past governors studied there. The School of Health Technology is also in Etinan.

Choose a project to see the details, photos and where it is.
The projects include a model primary school at Ikot Isong, a model primary health centre at Efa that is still being built, and compassionate homes in ten of the eleven wards. They also include a water facility at Ikot Eba and a care centre for older people at Itak.
For work and income
Most residents farm or trade, and the roads under construction are expected to ease the movement of produce and people, including the 10.83km road to Efa and Mkpat Enin. The Ibom Paint factory at Ikot Ekan has been revamped. There are 315 grant beneficiaries, and 5,000 oil palm seedlings were handed to the council chairman for farmers.
For getting around and reaching services
The roads link Etinan with Abak, Mkpat Enin and the School of Health Technology, and a 30 metre bridge forms part of the Mkpat Enin - Efa road. The projects also include solar street lights along the Uyo - Etinan road. The water facility at Ikot Eba and the model health centre at Efa add services for residents.
