About the programme
This programme gave 5,000 improved oil palm seedlings to farmers in Etinan Local Government Area. The State Agriculture and Food Security Committee handed the seedlings to the Etinan council chairman, who passes them on to farmers in the area.
The flag-off took place on 25 June 2026 at the council secretariat in Etinan, in partnership with the Akwa Ibom State Agricultural Development Programme (AKADEP). It is the first phase of the programme in the council area.
The seedlings come under the Akwa Ibom State Tree Crop Revolution, which Governor Pastor Umo Eno launched on 29 May 2026 at the rehabilitated AKADEP headquarters in Uyo. Under the scheme, smallholder farmers receive improved tenera oil palm seedlings at no cost, with the Nigerian Institute for Oil Palm Research (NIFOR) supplying the seedlings.
Oil palm takes some years to bear fruit, so this is a long-term investment. It is meant to raise palm oil output, give farm families a steady income and create jobs in processing and trade. It fits the ARISE Agenda's focus on agriculture, food security and wealth creation.
