About Ika

Ika has three major clans: Achan, Ito and Odoro. They are spread across eleven political wards. Ward names include Urban 1 and 2, Achan 1 to 3, Ito 1 to 3 and Odoro 1 and 2. Nto Ekot is the Paramount Ruler's village.

Farming and trading are the main work. Farmers in the rural communities carry their produce to markets and urban centres. Ika has grown since 1996 from a mainly rural community into a semi urban centre.

For many years Ika was known for communal and boundary disputes, including clashes with neighbouring areas of Abia State and an internal conflict between 2001 and 2008 that stopped schools, churches and markets. Peace has returned, and a dispute of about 58 years between Ikot Udo and a neighbouring Abia community has been settled. Urua Inyang has the Cottage Hospital.

How it helps people in Ika

For families and communities

A model health centre at Abiakana was commissioned in September 2025, and it brings primary, maternal and child care closer to rural residents who had to travel far. A free medical outreach has also served pregnant women and young children. There are twelve compassionate homes, ten of them completed. A model primary school at Urua Inyang is still being built. Peace is the base for all of this, including the end of a dispute at Ikot Udo that lasted about 58 years.

For work and income

The roads help farmers move produce to markets and help traders move goods, including to Mkpohoeto market and across the border to Abia State. There were 256 empowerment beneficiaries, mostly traders, farmers and people who received equipment support. A youth friendly centre is planned or in use for skills and computer training.

For getting around and reaching services

Two roads have been commissioned: the road from Ikot Akpan Okure to Azumini and the 1.3km link from Ikot Udom and Ikot Otong to Mkpohoeto market. The 3.75km Peace Accord Road to Ikot Udo and Abiaka is about 60 per cent complete and will link border communities to the headquarters at Urua Inyang. There are two more road projects. The health centre at Abiakana shortens the trip to care for nearby communities.
