About the project

ARISE Compassionate Homes are free houses that the Akwa Ibom State Government builds for widows, vulnerable families and people in need. Each home is furnished, with solar power and a detached kitchen, and the owner also receives a business grant to help them earn a living.

There are 12 Compassionate Homes in Ika Local Government Area. Ten have been completed and two are still being built.

The homes are spread across Ika villages, including Achan, Ikot Inwang, Ikot Otong, Nto Udo Enwang, Ikot Akpan Okure, Abiakana, Ikot Edim, Efen Ikot Okure, Nto Urua and Ndi Ika. The two homes still under construction are at Ikot Udo Ika and Nto Usoh Ika.

The scheme is meant to give families in poor housing a safe, decent home and a fresh start. It is one of the main humanitarian programmes of Governor Umo Eno's ARISE Agenda.

For work and income

A household that receives a home no longer has to spend on rent or on repairs to a failing house. Building in many villages also spreads work for local builders and suppliers across the LGA.
