About the project

The ARISE Compassionate Home at Uruk Ata Ikot Otok is a new two-bedroom bungalow in Uruk Ata Ikot Otok village, Etim Ekpo Local Government Area. It was the sixth Compassionate Home delivered in Etim Ekpo. It was built for an elderly widow whose old mud house had collapsed, leaving her without a safe place to live.

The home was delivered by the Akwa Ibom State Government under the ARISE Compassionate Homes scheme, run through the Governor's office and the Special Assistant on Humanitarian Affairs. A local church had earlier started a small building for her, but the state chose to build a brand-new, fully completed house from the ground up. A young local humanitarian who had cared for her for years first drew the government's attention to her case. The home is completed and handed over.

The house has solar-powered bedrooms, a parlour, an external kitchenette and its own borehole for water. It came fully furnished, with a sitting room set, a dining set and curtains. The beneficiary also received a N500,000 resettlement grant to help her settle in and support her livelihood.

The home is meant to give a vulnerable older person safety, dignity and steady shelter in her own village. It is part of the compassion pillar of the ARISE Agenda, which aims to reach poor and homeless people in their communities.

The home was commissioned on 24 June 2025 by Governor Umo Eno, represented by Prof. Imoh Moffat, immediate past Commissioner for Science and Technology. The Chairman of Etim Ekpo Local Government Council, Gideon Uwa, and the Special Assistant to the Governor on Humanitarian Affairs, Prince Nsikanabasi Umoekpo, were at the ceremony.
