About the programme

The Akwa Ibom State Government pays bursaries to eligible students of the state to help with the cost of their education. Students from Ika Local Government Area are among those who can benefit.

Bursary payments to students in tertiary institutions began in November 2023, at N10,000 for each student. The award was later raised to N20,000. In July 2026, Governor Umo Eno approved N1.3 billion for bursary payments to eligible students across the state. At the same time, the award for each student was raised from N20,000 to N50,000, an increase of 150 per cent.

Payments are going on. In late September 2026 the Commissioner for Youth Development said about N1.69 billion had been paid out so far across the state.

The bursary is meant to ease the burden of school costs on students and their families, help more young people get into and stay in higher education, and build the skills the state needs. It forms part of the human capital goals of the ARISE Agenda.

The number of students from Ika who have received the bursary has not yet been confirmed.

Impact on people and communities

For families and communities

A bursary helps students stay in school.

For work and income

The payments reduce what families must find for fees and upkeep. Over time, more graduates from Ika can mean more skilled workers for the area.
