Essien Udim is known for unity, as it joins the former Essien Annang and Udim areas, and for its cultural groups, its markets and the Ekpo masquerade of Ikpe Annang.
Essien Udim Local Government Area has its headquarters at Afaha Ikot Ebak. It was created on 3 May 1989 out of Ikot Ekpene Local Government Area. It brings together the former Essien Annang and Udim areas, and this union shows the unity the area is known for.
The area has eight clans: Adiasim, Afaha, Ekpenyong, Okon, Odoro Ikot, Ikpe Annang, Ukana West and Ukana East. It has 11 wards: Adiasim, Afaha, Ekpenyong 1, Ekpenyong 2, Ikpe, Odoro Ikot 1, Odoro Ikot 2, Okon, Ukana East, Ukana West 1 and Ukana West 2. The Paramount Ruler is His Royal Majesty Obong Cosmas O. Akpan, described as the longest serving monarch in the former South Eastern State.
Most of the people are farmers. They sell their produce at the three best known markets: Obo Annang market, Ofong Etor market in Ikpe Annang, and Urua Akpan market. Through these markets they keep in contact with other people in Annang land.
Cultural life includes the Nka Ikemesit Cultural Group of Ikot Essien Okon and the Uko Akpan Cultural Group of Ikot Obong Afaha Obong. The Ekpo masquerade of Ikpe Annang features in many cultural events. Places in the area include the council secretariat, the General Hospital in Ikpe Annang, the Police Secondary School and Obo Annang Junction in Ukana East.

For work and income
Most residents are farmers who trade at Obo Annang, Ofong Etor and Urua Akpan markets. The four road projects, including a 16km road with a 30m bridge, are expected to ease the movement of produce to those markets. There were also 107 farmers grants, 36 traders grants, 57 equipment support schemes and 2 MSME grants.
For getting around and reaching services
There are four road projects. The 16km road with a bridge links the Midim area. A CNG bus terminal is planned at the council headquarters to link residents with Uyo. The health centre at Midim Atan and the school at Ukana Iba add services close to rural communities.
