About the project

The Midim Atan - Ikot Inyang - Ikot Akpan Ekpenyong - Ikot Akpan - Etok Uruk Eshiet - Ikot Imonte Road is a 16-kilometre rural road with a 30-metre span bridge. It links communities in Essien Udim Local Government Area with Etim Ekpo Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State.

The project is funded by the Akwa Ibom State Government through the Ministry of Works and Fire Service. Governor Umo Eno flagged it off in February 2024 at St. Paul's Primary School, Midim, in Essien Udim. The old road and bridge on this route had collapsed, and people, including women and children, faced danger using them. Work is ongoing, and the road base has been cleared and graded. The contractor has not been named publicly.

When finished, the road is meant to give the villages along the route a safe, all-season link to each other and to Etim Ekpo. Farmers, traders, pupils and patients should be able to reach markets, schools and health centres more easily.

The road and bridge are expected to cut travel time, ease the movement of farm produce and support trade between the two local government areas. They form part of the ARISE Agenda aim of opening up rural communities. The road has not yet been commissioned.

The old bridge on this route was in poor condition and lives were lost there. A sound road and bridge are meant to give these communities safe access, including to the primary health centre being built at Midim Atan.

The road joins farming communities in Ekpenyong clan to the neighbouring Etim Ekpo area. Easier passage can help farmers and traders move produce between the two local government areas.
