About the project
This is the 30-metre span bridge on the 16-kilometre Midim Atan - Ikot Inyang - Ikot Akpan Ekpenyong - Ikot Akpan - Etok Uruk Eshiet - Ikot Imonte Road. The bridge is part of that road contract and not a separate build. It sits on the Midim axis in Ekpenyong, Essien Udim, and links communities in Essien Udim and Etim Ekpo Local Government Areas.
The project is funded by the Akwa Ibom State Government through the Ministry of Works and Fire Service. Governor Umo Eno flagged off the road and bridge in February 2024 at St. Paul's Primary School, Midim, in Essien Udim. The old road and bridge on this route had collapsed, and people, including women and children, faced danger using them. The state government listed the road and bridge as ongoing in April 2025 and again in October 2025. The contractor has not been named publicly.
When finished, the bridge is meant to give a safe, all-season crossing between Essien Udim and Etim Ekpo. It should let farmers, traders, pupils and patients move between the two areas without the risks of the old crossing, and give the communities on the route a better link towards the Ika road axis.
The bridge and road are expected to cut travel time, ease the movement of farm produce and goods, and support trade between the two local government areas. They form part of the ARISE Agenda aim of opening up rural communities. The bridge has not yet been commissioned.
