About Eastern Obolo

Most of its people are from the Obolo ethnic group. The LGA has two clans, Okoroete and Iko, and 10 political wards. It has 28 gazetted villages, some on upland and some in riverine areas. Communities in the area include Okoroete, Iko Town, Amadaka, Okoroiti, Okoroinyong, Kampa, Atabrikang, Elile, Isiotoyo and Ozoche.

Eastern Obolo is an oil-producing area. It also has the potential for a strong blue economy.

For the 30 years since it was created, the area had very little social infrastructure and almost no federal or state projects. The council had no secretariat of its own and worked from the Okoroete Health Centre. A permanent secretariat is being finished, and it should be commissioned by October 2026.

Grants, welfare and support, kept apart from the projects that were built.

How it helps people in Eastern Obolo

For families and communities

Eight vulnerable families now have a Compassionate Home, with a ninth nearly done. The solar water facility at Isiotoyo is complete and gives that community a water supply. The Model Primary School and the planned Model Primary Health Centre at Okoroete are designed to improve learning and care once finished.

For work and income

Grants and equipment support reached 127 Eastern Obolo business owners, traders and farmers, along with three vehicles. The ICT hub at Okoroete is designed to build digital and entrepreneurship skills for young people. Better roads are expected to ease the movement of goods and people when finished.

For getting around and reaching services

Road access is the area's most pressing problem. Two roads totalling 20.6km, one with two bridges, are under construction to link Okoroete, Iko, Elile, Amadaka and Kampa to the wider state. The 12km road is about 80% done.
