About the project

The Ukanafun General Hospital at Ikot Akpa Nkuk is a public hospital in Ukanafun Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State. It is the first functional hospital of its kind in Ukanafun, a local government area created in 1976.

The project began in 2009 as a cottage hospital but was abandoned for many years. The administration of Governor Pastor Umo Eno revived, rebuilt, completed and furnished it. The hospital runs fully on solar power and has a medical laboratory with automatic chemistry and haematology analysers, as well as staff accommodation. The work also included 2.2 kilometres of access and internal roads.

Governor Eno commissioned the hospital on Friday, 21 November 2025. At the event, he approved the installation of an MRI machine and dialysis units at the hospital. Dr. Ekerette Sunday Dan was named as its pioneer Medical Superintendent.

The hospital is meant to bring secondary health care within reach of the people of Ukanafun and nearby areas, who used to travel far for treatment. It is expected to ease pressure on hospitals in other towns. It fits the health care goals of the ARISE Agenda.

Impact Analysis

An assessment of the impact of these accomplishments on the people and communities.

For families and communities

Secondary medical services are now closer to residents. Families who once travelled long distances for treatment can now get essential care, emergency care and maternal and child health services inside Ukanafun.

For work and income

Care close to home saves families the cost of travelling out of the area for treatment. The hospital also gives work to health staff in the area.

Background

The hospital was started under an earlier administration, that of Senator Godswill Akpabio, and was completed and furnished under the Umo Eno administration.
