About the project

The Oron Maritime Infrastructure Project is a waterfront development on the Oron beachfront in Oron Local Government Area, on the Cross River estuary. Governor Umo Eno started it under the Blue Economy targets of the ARISE Agenda, to put Oron's coastal location to work for water transport, trade, tourism and commerce.

The Akwa Ibom State Government is paying for the project, and JMK Construction Company Limited is building it. The Governor flagged off the work on Wednesday 12 March 2025, with a target of September 2025. Work was still going on in 2026. The Governor inspected progress in January 2026 and visited the site again during his Oron tour on 26 May 2026. By October 2026 the terminal and warehouse were roofed, the jetty shelter and shore protection were in place, and the ferries were close to finished.

The project has a terminal building, a passenger jetty, a cargo jetty, a floating bar, a Joint Task Force jetty, a warehouse, a cold room, drying facilities, a workshop, a car park, a recreational area and a hotel. Steel shore protection runs along the waterfront. Two ferries are being built for the state at the Naval Shipyard in Port Harcourt for an Oron to Calabar service.

The project is meant to make Oron a maritime and commercial hub and to link the coastal communities better. It should make it easier to move passengers and goods by water, support fishing and fish processing, and cut the fish that is lost after each catch. It should also bring hotels and visitors to the coast, create jobs for young people and local businesses, make the waterways safer and draw private investment.

In the long run, the project could make Oron a main gateway for coastal trade, give local communities more ways to earn a living and help Akwa Ibom State grow its economy beyond oil, in line with the ARISE Agenda.

Impact Analysis

An assessment of the impact of these accomplishments on the people and communities.

For families and communities

Jetties, a terminal and two ferries will make travel by water safer and more orderly. Shore protection guards the waterfront, and the JTF jetty supports security on the waterways.

For work and income

The cold room, warehouse and drying facilities help fishermen and traders keep more of each catch. The terminal, hotel and recreational area should bring visitors, trade, private investment and jobs for young people and local businesses.
