About the project
The Dualization of the 13.5-kilometre Okopedi to Oron Road by East-West Road is a major road project linking Okobo and Oron Local Government Areas. It is Phase II of the East-West Road corridor in Oro Nation. The road turns the old single road from Okopedi to Uya Oron into a dual carriageway, with a bridge on the route.
The Akwa Ibom State Government is paying for the road under Governor Umo Eno. The contractor is China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC). Governor Eno flagged off the work in Okobo Local Government Area in February 2024, with a delivery period of 24 months. In a later progress report, overall work was put at over 56 percent, drainage at over 75 percent, and earthworks at about 67 percent, with piling for the bridge under way. By early 2026, long stretches were asphalted, with a concrete median, lined side drains and deep cuttings, while the bridge deck was still being built.
The road is the main gateway from Uyo, the state capital, into Oro Nation. It links farms, markets and fishing communities in Okobo and Oron to the Okopedi end of the corridor and onward to Uyo.
Once complete, the road is expected to cut travel time, ease the movement of farm produce and seafood, and open the Oron waterfront to more trade and tourism. It is meant to work together with the Unyenge to Universal Energy road in Mbo and the Oron maritime project. It is part of the infrastructure pillar of the ARISE Agenda.
