About the project
General Hospital, Iquita, is the main public hospital in Oron Local Government Area. It was founded in 1941 and is one of the three reference hospitals in Akwa Ibom State. It serves Oron and neighbouring areas such as Udung Uko, whose people have long travelled there for treatment.
The hospital was remodelled and reopened in July 2019 under the previous state administration. The work brought new equipment and a digital records system to replace paper files.
In May 2025, the hospital received an ambulance and protective equipment from the Niger Delta Development Commission, which the state Commissioner for Health received.
As a reference hospital, it is meant to take patients referred from primary health centres across Oro Nation, including the new Model Primary Health Centre in Oron. Continued support is expected to keep more people treated close to home.
