Okobo - Uya Oron Road

About the project

The Okobo - Uya Oron Road is the 13.5-kilometre dualisation of the Okopedi to Oron road, which forms Phase II of the East-West Road corridor in Akwa Ibom State. It starts at Okopedi in Okobo Local Government Area and runs towards Uya Oron in Oron LGA.

The project is funded by the Akwa Ibom State Government and is being built by China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC). Governor Umo Eno flagged it off in Okobo on 13 February 2024, with a 24-month delivery period. Work is ongoing. By mid-2025, overall progress had passed 56 percent, with drains above 75 percent and earthworks near 67 percent.

The work turns the old road into a wide dual carriageway with drains, side barriers and a new bridge. It continues from the completed Uyo to Okopedi dual carriageway towards Oron.

When finished, the road is expected to cut travel time between Uyo, Okobo and Oron, ease the movement of goods and people across the Oro area, and help revive trade and economic activity that has been falling. It fits the ARISE Agenda's plan to improve key roads across the state.

Impact Analysis

An assessment of the impact of these accomplishments on the people and communities.

For families and communities

When finished, the road is meant to give Okobo people a second good route, this time towards Oron and its neighbouring Oro communities. That can make visits, schooling and health trips across the Oro area simpler.

For work and income

The road will boost economic activity in the area, which has been diminishing. A link towards Oron can help farmers and fishermen reach more buyers once the road is open.
