ARISE Compassionate Homes

About the project

The ARISE Compassionate Homes scheme in Okobo Local Government Area provides free houses for elderly and vulnerable residents who have no decent place to live. Twelve homes have been built or are being built across the LGA.

The homes are spread across twelve communities: Udung Ukpong, Atipa Odobo, Nnung Ukana, Ekpene Ukim Eta, Obufi Okobo, Ikot Odung, Udung Affian, Nsie, Ofieke Offi, Enweme, Oti Oro and Akwang. Most are finished. The homes at Oti Oro village and Akwang are still under construction.

The scheme is funded by the Akwa Ibom State Government under Governor Umo Eno. Each home is built in the beneficiary's own village. Across the state, the homes are two-bedroom units with furniture, solar power and a borehole for water, and each beneficiary also receives a cash grant to start a small trade.

The homes are meant to give older and poorer residents a safe and dignified place to live among their own people. The scheme is part of the ARISE Agenda's focus on caring for the less privileged.

Impact Analysis

An assessment of the impact of these accomplishments on the people and communities.

For families and communities

A decent house gives people who were poorly housed safety, privacy and dignity. It also takes pressure off relatives and neighbours who were helping them.

For work and income

People who receive a home no longer have to spend on rent or on patching a failing house. Building the homes in different villages also gives work to local builders.
