About the project

Ibom Medical City is a large health care complex under construction in Ikono Local Government Area, along the Uyo to Ikot Ekpene Road. The site covers about 100 hectares. Its main building, the Ibom International Hospital, is a 10-storey hospital with 350 beds.

It is an Akwa Ibom State Government project under Governor Umo Eno. The idea was endorsed at the ARISE Health Sector Town Hall Meeting in July 2025. Tokiye Integrated Medical Services, a health project development and management firm, is managing the project. In August 2025 the Governor ordered piling works to start and the site to be cleared. The main building rests on 356 foundation piles. The project model was unveiled on 23 June 2026, with the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Professor Muhammad Ali Pate, present. Work is ongoing.

The plan brings hospital care in many specialties, medical training, research, staff housing, pharmacy and laboratory services, and digital health into one place.

Once complete, the medical city is expected to cut the number of people travelling abroad for treatment and make Akwa Ibom a centre for specialist care in the region. The state plans to send 100 indigenes abroad for specialist training six months before it opens. It fits the health pillar of the ARISE Agenda.

The medical city has not yet been commissioned.

Impact Analysis

An assessment of the impact of these accomplishments on the people and communities.

For families and communities

The complex is meant to bring higher-level medical care into this part of the state. People in Ikono would then have a major hospital nearer than Uyo.

For work and income

The Medical City has the prospect of drawing medical tourism to Ikono, with economic benefits for local people. Visitors and staff would need food, lodging and transport.
