About the project

The oil palm processing mills in Abak are small factories that turn palm fruit into palm oil, placed across all 11 wards of the Local Government Area. Sites include Otoro, Midim, Abak Urban and Afaha Obong wards, as well as Oku Abak, with a larger mill and storage house at Ikot Akwa Ebom in Ediene.

The mills are delivered under the Nigeria for Women Project, which is supported by the World Bank, with the Akwa Ibom State Government. They are run by women's cooperatives. The mills use machines for heating, pressing and separating fibre, in place of slow hand methods.

Governor Umo Eno commissioned the mill at Oku Abak in late January 2026. About 200 women run it as a cooperative. Output there rose from one drum of palm oil a day to eight. The Governor pledged 10 tonnes of palm fruit for the next cycle, security for the site, lighting and a better access road. The women also receive training in saving, leadership, hygiene and the prevention of gender-based violence.

The mills are meant to raise output and income for rural women who process palm produce. They are expected to help Abak sell palm oil to other states, and they fit the ARISE Agenda focus on farming and jobs.

Impact Analysis

An assessment of the impact of these accomplishments on the people and communities.

For families and communities

The mills are aimed at rural women, who do much of the palm oil processing. A mill in the ward is meant to bring this work closer to where they live.

For work and income

The mills will raise output, lower the cost of processing oil palm and improve profit on palm produce. They also add to the effort to make the state a major palm belt.
