For families and communities
A water point in the village can cut the time households spend fetching water, a task that often falls to women and children. Clean water close to home also supports better hygiene.

This is a solar-powered water scheme at Ikot Oku Usung in Ukanafun Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State. It was built by the Akwa Ibom State Government under Governor Umo Eno, through the Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation and the State Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency.
The scheme has a borehole, a 2.6 kilowatt solar system that can run the pump for 24 hours, and an elevated 22,000-litre tank with a water treatment plant. It also supplies the nearby Ikot Ekperikpe community and CCC Secondary School.
Before the project, people in the village walked more than two kilometres to a stream or bought water from vendors. Officials estimated that the scheme would save the community about N18 million a year in water costs.
The project was commissioned on 21 March 2025 by the Commissioner for Water Resources and Sanitation, Hon. Ubuo Ubuo, who represented the Governor. He said it was the first of eleven solar-powered water projects due for commissioning. The scheme is expected to cut water-borne illness and the time families spend fetching water.

Because the pump is powered by the sun, the system does not depend on fuel or the public power supply to run. Time saved on fetching water can go into farming, trade and school.
