About the project
Youth Development Centres are skills and recreation centres the Akwa Ibom State Government is building in the 31 Local Government Areas under Governor Umo Eno. Each centre is meant to give young people a place to learn digital and trade skills close to home.
The centres are paid for by the state government and run by the Ministry of Youth Development, working with the Ministries of Digital Economy and Sports. Each LGA provides the land, and 14 had done so by May 2026. The first centre to be finished, in Oron LGA, was commissioned by the Governor in May 2026. The others are to follow across all 31 LGAs, with a target of 2027.
Each centre has a multipurpose training hall, a digital library and ICT hub, a creative and media centre, a youth enterprise kiosk, lounge and recreation spaces with games such as table tennis, chess and scrabble, and solar power. Training covers ICT, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, fashion design, catering, digital literacy and business skills. Social welfare officers offer counselling, including on drug abuse.
About 100 youths are to be trained in each cycle, about 1,000 a year in each LGA, or 31,000 a year across the state when all centres are running. The centres are expected to cut rural to urban migration and help young people find work or start businesses. They support the youth empowerment goals of the ARISE Agenda.
